ADP: adposition

Definition

Adposition is a cover term for prepositions (e.g. navkljub vremenu “notwithstanding the weather”) and postpositions (e.g. vremenu navkljub “the weather notwithstanding”), with prepositions prevailing in Slovenian. They normally occur before noun phrases to express its grammatical and semantic relation to another unit within a clause.

Adpositions determine the case of the complement phrase, e.g. brez časpopisa “without newspaper” (genitive), k časopisu “to newspaper” (dative), za časopis “for newspaper” (accusative), v časopisu “in newspaper” (locative), s časopisom “with newspaper” (instrumental).
