The VerbType
feature is used in Afrikaans to further distinguish subtypes of auxiliary verbs.
Cop
: copula verb
Verb used to make nominal predicates from adjectives, nouns or participles.
Examples
- Ons demokrasie is gesond. “Our democracy is healthy.”
Aux
: temporal auxiliary verb
Verb used to create periphrastic perfect tenses.
Examples
- Dit het tot ‘n verenigde staat gelei. “This has led to a united state.”
Pas
: passive auxiliary verb
Verb used to create periphrastic passive voice: word (present) and wees (past).
Examples
- Welvaart word geskep om mense se lewenskwaliteit te verbeter. “Wealth is created to improve people’s quality of life.”
Mod
: modal verb
A group of auxiliary verbs that alter the mood of the clause (necessity, potentiality etc.) The future tense auxiliary is also considered modal.
Examples
- Deur saam te werk, kan ons meer bereik. “By working together, we can achieve more.”
