For the purposes of annotation, we acknowledge three values: absolute superlative, augmentative and diminutive.

Besides Absolute Superlative for adjectives and adverbs, Portuguese can express diminutive and augmentative meanings by adding suffixes to words with the POS tags: nouns, proper nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, and verbs (non-finite forms).

Abs: absolute superlative

In Portuguese, suffixes “íssimo(a)”, “érrimo(a)”, “ésimo(a)” added to the ADJ and ADV tags indicate that the quality of an object or an action is very strong in terms of size, intensity or excellence. This is called Absolute Superlative .

Examples

Dim: diminutive

The suffixes mostly used for diminutives are “inho(a)”, “zinho(a)”. Others are “ito(a)”, “ulo(a)”, “culo(a)”, “ote”’, “im”. These suffixes are used to construe meanings, not only of smallness of an object or quality, but also of intimacy or endearment. They can also construe pejorative meanings.

Examples

Aug: augmentative

This feature is used to express that something exceeds normal proportion in terms of size, intensity or excellence. The suffixes mostly used for augmentatives are “ão”, “ona”, “aço(a)”.
