Tense is an inflectional feature of verbs and auxiliaries that specifies the time when the action took / takes / will take place, in relation to the current moment or to another action in the utterance.

Imp: imperfect tense

The imperfect past tense denotes actions that were ongoing or used to occur in the past.

The present tense denotes actions that are happening right now or that usually happen.

The preterite past tense denotes actions that occurred at a specific time in the past.
