Tense is an inflectional feature of verbs and auxiliaries that specifies the time when the action took / takes / will take place, in relation to the current moment or to another action in the utterance.
Imp: imperfect tense
The imperfect past tense denotes actions that were ongoing or used to occur in the past.
Examples
- Yo hablaba español. “I used to speak Spanish.”
- Ellos leían el libro. “They were reading the book.”
Pres: present tense
The present tense denotes actions that are happening right now or that usually happen.
Examples
- Yo hablo español. “I speak Spanish.”
- Ellos leen el libro. “They read the book.”
Past: past tense
The preterite past tense denotes actions that occurred at a specific time in the past.
Examples
- Yo hablé español. “I spoke Spanish.”
- Ellos leyeron el libro. “They read the book.”
Fut: future tense
The future tense denotes actions that will happen after the current moment.
Examples
- Yo hablaré español. “I will speak Spanish.”
- Ellos leerán el libro. “They will read the book.”
